Cefas operates across a diverse range of environments undertaking a breadth of activities, each with distinct H&S considerations.

Scientific Research and Fieldwork • Includes marine and freshwater science, environmental monitoring, and aquaculture assessments • Fieldwork often involves working in, on, or near water, handling biological samples, and deploying monitoring equipment Laboratory-Based Science • Conducted at Cefas facilities such as Lowestoft and Weymouth laboratories • Involves handling hazardous substances (COSHH), use of specialist equipment, and adherence to strict lab safety protocols Vessel-Based Operations • Work aboard research vessels like the RV Cefas Endeavour, and a range of chartered vessels, includes sampling, equipment deployment, and navigation in challenging marine conditions.
