WEST MIDLANDS COMBINED AUTHORITY
Redevelopment of University Station
This is a contract result notice, not an open opportunity. Details from the official award data.
University Station was built in the 1970s as part of the introduction of the Cross-City Line.
The station was designed for approximately 400,000 passengers per annum and, except for some modifications in the 1990s during electrification, has remained fairly untouched since.
Today the station is used by over 3 million passengers per year, with numbers expected to reach over 7 million passengers by 2043.
To meet these increased capacity requirements and offer an improved passenger experience, it is anticipated (based on current scope) the project shall deliver: (a) A new station entrance building at the Birmingham end of the station site with an integral footbridge link to Platform 2 where there will be a second pavilion building; (b) Lift access on both platforms; (c) Platform widening; (d) A bridge crossing the canal that links the platform 2 pavilion to the University of Birmingham campus; (e) Public realm area linking the existing station to the new entrance and which includes the pick-up / drop-off and cycle storage facilities; and (f) Refurbishment of the existing station building to act as an exit only.
