The brief

Building information modelling (BIM) is a process involving the generation and management of digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of places.

BIMs are files (often but not always in proprietary formats and containing proprietary data) which can be extracted, exchanged or networked to support decision-making regarding a building or other built asset.

Current BIM software is used by individuals, businesses and government agencies who plan, design, construct, operate and maintain diverse physical infrastructures, such as water, refuse, electricity, gas, communication utilities, roads, bridges, ports, tunnels, etc.

The Catapult have been commissioned to undertake an independent BIM Level 3 industry consultation to determine: · Insights into sectoral challenges, user needs and benefits; · Map of capabilities and value streams within and between different sectors; and · Technical alignment with other industrial sectors and standards to enable an ecosystem of interconnected technologies.

Only the broadest cross-cutting themes are apparent, e.g standards and the interconnection of policy, procurement, Industry, operations, consumers, and the importance of "data" in driving innovation in the sector.

The communication challenge between these domains and academia requires professional management and is core to this tender.

The Catapult requires a suitably experienced and capable supplier of research services to provide a state of the art review evidencing needs and links/interfaces of Building Information Modelling and barriers to implementation.

The deliverables are as follows: · Desk research services; · Workshop (1) 20 delegates, one day in London (hosted at the Urban Innovation Centre); · Workshop (2) 40 delegates, one day in London (hosted at the Urban Innovation Centre); · Contribution and participation to a half day fortnightly co-ordination/stakeholder board/governance meetings are attended in person in London; and · Report and MS PowerPoint write up summarising the findings.
