Defra procuring on behalf of Natural England: A CASE studentship has recently been agreed supervised by the University of Exeter and supported by Natural England and the British Trust for Ornithology and which aims to gather evidence of some of these key aspects of the biology of the lesser black-backed gull.
This will contribute to the development of a strategy for its conservation in England.
A key part if the evidence in this studentship is to gather data from the colonies on the Ribble and in Bowland, the only UK SPAs with increasing populations of lesser black-backed gulls.
Data from the other SPA population in North West England at Walney (part of Morecambe Bay SPA) and from a non-SPA urban site is being gathered separately.
