The brief

Surrey has one of the busiest road networks in the country, carrying double the national average traffic flow.

A large proportion of Surrey's population relies on the private car for their travel to and from work with 63% of work journeys being made by car, and trips to usual place of work accounting for 18% of all trips.

The negative impacts to society and the environment of the reliance on the car include: inactivity epidemic (23% of the Surrey adult population is active for less than 30 minutes per week), loss of health benefits from physical activity as part of the daily routine, health impacts caused by air/noise/water pollution, GHG emissions, road accidents, economic impact of congestion in Surrey.

In order to meet Surrey's Climate Change Strategy a target has been set to reduce transport emissions by 60% by 2035.

The IPPR finds that businesses are in an excellent position to support modal shift.

SCC has been successful in being awarded a grant from Active Travel England part of which is to be used to support a number of (we suggest three) employers to support their staff to travel more sustainably, and to develop resources to support Surrey employers generally.

SCC is seeking a consultant to undertake this work.
