The brief

The National Infrastructure Commission is set up to provide strategic advice to the government on the UK's long term infrastructure needs.

The Commissions remit covers economic infrastructure within the UK, which includes the electricity system.

As part of the National Infrastructure Assessment, published in 2018, the Commission made recommendations concerning the UK future electricity system.

A central focus of these recommendations was that the UK government should ensure that the electricity system is running on at least fifty per cent renewable generation by 2030.

In this context the Commission is eager to keep abreast of the developing evidence base on renewable deployment.

This includes understanding how other countries or significant regions are progressing with renewable deployment.

Developing and synthesising the evidence base on the international progress is the focus of this procurement.

The three primary aims of this project are: Understand where the UK sits, in terms of deployment of renewables and enabling technologies, relative to comparable electricity systems around the world Synthesise evidence on how effective current policies and markets have been in deploying high levels of renewables to date; and \r Summarise how other regions/countries that have deployed high levels of renewables have integrated them effectively onto their electricity grids.
