The brief

Road weather forecasts are required to support Regional Operation Centre decision makers to mitigate the effects of severe weather on the Strategic Road Network (SRN) as far as practicable.

National Highways commitments that aims to keep the SRN free from snow and ice, leading to: - A reduction in winter accidents; - Maintaining mobility in winter weather; and - Fulfilment of the Secretary of State obligations as the Highway Authority.

The forecast information supports the following activities: - decisions to deploy the gritter fleet that spread de-icing materials to prevent ice formation; - the removal of snow; - operational resilience planning and preparation; - planning and implementing operational interventions such as speed restrictions, height restrictions or lane closures to maintain safety during severe weather events; & - informing customers and stakeholders of potential severe weather events affecting the network, such as high winds and ice or snow.

Scope of Services: 1.

National Forecast Service: Lot 1 Provide detailed weather forecasts from October to April.

Supply embedded forecasters at the National Traffic Operations Centre (NTOC).

Area Forecasting Service: Lot 2 Support winter maintenance decisions across various regions.

Aid in the deployment of gritter fleets for de-icing and snow removal operations.

Assist in strategic planning to maintain road safety and mobility during severe weather.

These services are crucial for minimising winter accidents, ensuring uninterrupted mobility, and fulfilling our statutory obligations as the Highway Authority.
