The brief

The quantum technology transfer centre at the University of Birmingham is part of the Quantum Hub for Sensors and Metrology.

We are looking for a Titanium sapphire laser for our strontium optical clock development and for use as a reference laser as part of our engagement with industry. • Target operation wavelength of 813nm.

All specification will be referenced at the wavelength unless otherwise specified. • Pump laser should operate single frequency at 532nm. • Laser will operate in continuous wave (cw) mode. • Output power greater than or equal to 4 watts. • Linewidth less than 500kHz free running (100ms timescale) • Output wavelength should be continuously tuneable over the range of 725nm to 875nm or better. • Laser should remain locked for >1000 hours without dropouts. • Amplitude noise of 0.1% or better between 10Hz and 10MHz. • Long term RMS power stability of 0.1% or better. • Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) of -75dB or better in the region +/- 50nm away from the carrier. • TEM00 output with an M2 of 1.1 or better (closer to 1) • Frequency scan of at least 10GHz/s • Frequency scan range of at least 10GHz without mode hop • Actuation for locking laser to external reference, e.g.

High finesse cavity. • Output polarisation either horizontal or vertical with an extinction ratio of 100:1 or better. • Physical dimensions of laser head should be 30cm x 30 cm x 15cm (l x w x h) or less • The laser should have full computer software support. • Computer control should have easy integration with lab view and python based programming languages.

Overall budget for this item is up to £100,000 excluding VAT.
