The brief

The University has set a target to achieve Net Carbon Zero by 2030.

As part of this objective, there is a wide recognition the gas installations contained within the Energy Centre on Highfield Campus are the single biggest consumer of gas (accounting for c.66% of the remaining Scope 1 carbon footprint).

In 2026, the 2 x Combined Heat and Power (CHP Engines) and 6 x gas boilers will come to the end of their economic life.

A decision needs to be made on what will replace them, how the University will provide sustainable heating and power on Highfield Campus, and the implications of this decision.

This contract is for the support of an external consultant to assist in the development of this plan by undertaking a technical, commercial and feasibility review of the pathways to Net-Zero Carbon for the replacement of our CHP and gas boiler installations.

The outcome of this review will be a costed implementation plan for delivering Net-Zero Carbon that accounts for commercial, technical and institutional feasibility.
