The City of London Corporation owns and manages London’s three principal wholesale food markets.
Our aim is to co-locate all three markets on a new site to create a significant new food wholesale location for London.
Our wholesale food markets are: • Billingsgate, the UK’s largest inland fish market • New Spitalfields, Britain’s premier wholesale fruit, vegetable and flower market • Smithfield, the world- famous meat and poultry market The City Corporation has a long and proud history of owning and managing these markets, dating back to medieval times.
For a long time located in the City, today New Spitalfields is based in Leyton and Billingsgate is located next to Canary Wharf with Smithfield the only one still located in the Square Mile.
The three markets have so far always been located separately from one another.
Our aim is to co-locate the markets to the new site in Dagenham Dock in order to create a modern wholesale location for London and the UK The City are currently developing the delivery strategy for the Markets Co-location Programme and Dagenham Dock New Markets and developed a soft market testing exercise to engage with the market at an early stage and encourage contractors to provide written feedback/views/suggestions during this process.
