The brief

Bangor University (BU) and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) are working in partnership to deliver the North Wales Medical School (NWMS), an established Welsh Government-funded programme designed to increase medical education and training capacity across North Wales.

The works comprise of the alterations and adaptations of the existing building to form a new medical training centre.

All activities must be planned for a live hospital environment, coordinating outages and access with Estates/ICT, and must comply with site rules, CDM, and applicable NHS W /BCUHB technical standards.

The Ysbyty Gwynedd contract comprises the development of additional teaching accommodation together with the refurbishment of the existing education facilities.

The existing education accommodation at YG has a fragmented layout, which limits the functionality and effectiveness of the current teaching environment.

A review of the available accommodation against the space requirements necessary to support the teaching and learning activity associated with the curriculum has also identified that the existing rooms and overall available space are undersized.

In addition, the existing education facilities are located along a corridor which is also used by patients, staff and carers as a route to and from the Endoscopy Department.

The Estates Department has confirmed that there is no alternative route available, which presents an additional consideration in the planning and development of the education environment.

The proposed works include: • Extension onto the existing roof area to provide additional teaching accommodation. • Refurbishment and improvement of the existing education spaces. • Reconfiguration and enhancement of the education environment to address the current fragmented layout and improve its suitability for teaching and learning activities. • Improvements to the education accommodation to support the space requirements associated with the NWMS curriculum.

The scheme will increase the available teaching capacity at Ysbyty Gwynedd and provide an improved and more appropriately sized education environment to support the delivery of the NWMS programme.
