The brief

The General Dental Council (GDC) will be looking for support from an executive search agency to undertake effective advertising, search, selection and candidate management services to help us recruit a new Chair of Council.

The new Chair will take over Chairing responsibilities from 1 October 2021 and will be required to commit at least 2 days a week to the role with a remuneration of £55,000.

The initial term will be for 4 years, with the option to extend by another term of 4 years.

Whilst the official term will not begin until autumn 2021, when the current Chair will demit office, the successful candidate will need to undertake an extensive induction and handover period, and must be available to commit at least 2 days a week from confirmation of appointment (circa July 2021).

It is important that the GDC has the highest calibre of leadership through the expertise of its Council.

As with all those in public office, Council members, including the Chair, are expected to act in accordance with the Principles of Public Life.

The GDC is the UK-wide statutory regulator of over 100,000 members of the dental team, including approximately 40,000 dentist and 60,000 dental care professionals - dental nurses, clinical dental technicians, dental hygienists, dental technicians, dental therapists and orthodontic therapists.

We have a public protection role which is set out in primary and secondary legislation.

The Dentists Act 1984, sets us the following objectives: - to protect the public; - to protect, promote and maintain the health, safety and well- being of the public to promote; and - maintain confidence in the dental profession to promote and maintain proper professional standards and conduct for these professions.

We do this by ensuring that dental professionals meet our standards, which reflect patient expectations, and deliver safe and appropriate care to patients.

In order to discharge this duty, it is important that the public have confidence in the GDC as a highly effective regulator.

A high performing Council is a fundamental factor in achieving this.

The GDC is led by a Council of 12 members, 6 lay (including the Chair) and 6 dental professionals.

Our current Chair of Council, Dr Williams Moyes has been in post for seven years and will be demitting office at the end of September 2021.

The GDC employs circa 350 staff who work from our head office in London and our Birmingham office.

Our current Chief Executive and Registrar is Ian Brack, leads a team of five Executive Directors.
