The brief

The surveillance programme known as the Predatory Birds Monitoring Scheme is the longest running environmental monitoring scheme of its kind.

It aims to detect and quantify current and emerging chemical threats to wildlife by monitoring the concentrations of contaminants of concern in bird carcasses and eggs.

The programme contributes supporting evidence for species protection, biodiversity surveillance and wildlife management.

It informs our assessment of risks to wildlife of chemicals in the environment and supports our advice on Government policy respecting those chemicals.

Within this broad framework, emphasis has changed over the years to reflect contemporary concerns.

The scheme is funded by a consortium of industry, government and agencies, as well as core funding from NERC.

The contract is renewed annually with redefined programmes of work, as well as with changes to the contributions made by the partners.
