When this comes round again

Board of Trustees of the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew publishes Construction work continuously — 20 notices, roughly one every 43 days. This is a stream to watch, not a cycle to wait for.

20% of Board of Trustees of the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew’s awards go to a supplier it has used before.

Which is the argument for getting on the list rather than winning this one. The incumbent is rarely the last winner — it is the roster. See the retention odds by category →

The brief

Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew ('RBG Kew') is a world-famous centre for botanical and mycological knowledge.

With two inspiring gardens at Kew in west London and Wakehurst in Sussex, we enchant our visitors with the wonder of plant diversity.

The RBG Kew mission is to be a globally recognised resource for plant and fungal knowledge, building an understanding of the world's plants and fungi upon which all our lives depend.

RBG Kew's impact on the environment (including climate and biodiversity) sits at the heart of RBG Kew's work.

Our commitment to tackling the environmental emergency is identified in our Manifesto for Change, Science Strategy, Sustainability Strategy, and Environmental Sustainability Policy, but also sits centrally to our day-to-day operational activities.

At Kew Gardens, both the Jodrell and Melon Yard buildings are served by three gas-fired boilers located in a dedicated, below-ground plant room, located outside the footprint of the building.

Within the Jodrell, the boilers supply hot water, the AHUs and radiators.

In addition, the boilers also supply heating to the Melon Yard Glass Houses.

At present the systems are not separated' Designs have been completed to replace dual-fire oil/gas burners with a bespoke air source/water source heat pump plant.

Including, new HV (UKPN), LV switchgear, PV Array, AHU and associated plant to: 1 - Reduce carbon emissions by 633 Tonnes CO2 per year.

2 - Increase Kew's onsite generation of renewable electricity by 38,612 kWh per year.

3 - Reduce Kew's operational reliance on fossil fuels for heating our buildings.

4 - Increase electrical resilience due to upgraded substation capacity.

5 - Have minimal impact on users.
