The brief

Southampton City Council is commissioning an Outpatient Tobacco Dependency Service for Southampton.

University Hospital Southampton (UHS) is currently providing an inpatient tobacco dependency cessation offer to all patients.

The work to address tobacco dependency commenced with the implementation of the NHS Long Term Plan (LTP) and sought to improve the tobacco dependency pathway for inpatients.

This service, referred to as the Outpatient Tobacco Dependency Service (OTDS), will engage with people, identified as tobacco dependent and referred to them by the Inpatient Tobacco Dependency Team.

The service will provide patients with behavioural support to set a quit date (SAQD) and access to stop smoking aids, such as Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) once discharged.

This will also include support for outpatients attending the Targeted Lung Health Check Programme (TLHC).

This approach is funded by SCC Public Health team and ensures support to individuals, in combination with the LTP and enables residents in Southampton city to stop smoking, in line with national strategies and guidance.
