When this comes round again

THE HORNIMAN PUBLIC MUSEUM AND PUBLIC PARK TRUST's Construction cycle is past due — it ran about every 4 months across 19 notices, and the door is open now. It may re-tender at any time.

25% of THE HORNIMAN PUBLIC MUSEUM AND PUBLIC PARK TRUST’s awards go to a supplier it has used before.

Which is the argument for getting on the list rather than winning this one. The incumbent is rarely the last winner — it is the roster. See the retention odds by category →

The brief

The Horniman Museum and Gardens is a grade II* listed museum with a world class Natural History, Anthropology and Musical instrument collection.

Items in the Horniman Collection when not on display are stored, managed, studied and conserved at the Study Collection Centre (SCC).

The existing Spirit Store is a refrigerated container which holds generally organic and biological items which are preserved in vessels of flammable spirit such as denatured alcohol or formalin.

The store requires replacement.

The Horniman wishes to appoint a contractor to develop their Employer's Requirements into a design and deliver the works for a replacement Spirit Store.

The Horniman Museum and Gardens is a grade II* listed museum with a world class Natural History, Anthropology and Musical instrument collection.

Set within 16 acres of stunning grounds that also house an Aquarium, Animal Walk and Butterfly House.

The Horniman connects us all with global cultures and the natural environment, encouraging us to shape a positive future for the world we all share.

Items in the Horniman Collection when not on display are stored, managed, studied and conserved at the Study Collection Centre (SCC), Old School Close, Greenwich, London SE10 0PG.

Many items require very particular storage conditions for safety and conservation.

At SCC, the existing Spirit Store holds generally organic and biological items which are preserved in vessels of flammable spirit such as denatured alcohol or formalin.

Due to the need for flashpoint temperature control and inherent fire risk, the Spirit Store is a secure refrigerated walk-in container which stands apart from the main storage building.

The Spirit Store container is aged with general conditional, operational and plant performance limitations which give risk to safety and collection conservation risks.

The nature and quantity of the museum's collection is also changing over time, and working practices are updating.

These are the key drivers presenting opportunity for a project to re-provide a modernised Spirit Store facility.

There are further containers on site which require re-organisation by repositioning them during this project.

Project broadly includes: • The contractor's design of a replacement Spirit Store. • The contractor's fabrication, construction, delivery, erection and fitting out of the replacement Spirit Store. • The contractor's associated site preparations, groundworks, utilities and services provision. • The contractor's associated firewall construction • The contractor's carrying out repositioning of further existing container stores on the site, with associated groundworks.

The full Scope and Objectives of the project can be found in the attached Employer's Requirements document and drawings A101, A102 and A103.

What it takes to bid this

Bid effort is not estimable from a framework ceiling — the published figure is the agreement’s maximum across every supplier and call-off, not the value of the work you would bid for. The requirements below still apply.

Typical for this category — confirm against the ITT pack

  • Hold at bidSSIP-family accreditation (CHAS / Constructionline)
  • Hold at bidISO 45001 / H&S policy & CDM competence
  • Show at bidNamed site & contract managers with CVs
  • Show at bidComparable references / case studies
  • Hold at bidFinancial standing (accounts, often ~2× contract value turnover)
  • Hold at bidInsurance cover (PL / EL, often PI)
  • Show at bidSocial value commitments

Hold at bid = pass/fail conditions of participation. Show at bid = scored in the quality response. Plan for delivery = contract obligations from day one.
