The brief

Based on the historic site of the Maudsley Hospital in Southeast London, The Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People PMCYP will transform our knowledge and understanding of young people’s mental health and reduce the time it takes to bring new treatments to patients.

The proposed plans seek to create a transformative centre in which clinicians, scientists and educators collaborate in one outward-facing centre of research.

The PMCYP building is located at on the Northeast of the Maudsley Hospital Campus.

The building is approximately 9,150m2 GIA over 10 levels including 8th floor rooftop outdoor learning zone space.

The building will house modern inpatient, outpatient and crisis mental health care facilities for children and young people, as well as state of the art clinical research facilities.

It will bring together clinicians from the UK’s largest NHS provider of specialist child and adolescent mental health services to work with the largest group of mental health scientists and clinical academics in Europe.

The New Children and Young Persons (CYP) project is planned to start occupation in May 0f 2026.

The building is classified as a high risk build under the building safety act 2022.

The area of the works is on the 4th floor of the building which is a dedicated CAMHS unit, the whole of this floor will remain unoccupied until the sprinkler and associated works are completed.

Ceiling Works: Significant corridor and some room ceiling removal anticipated for sprinkler adjustments.

System Upgrade: New pre-action sprinkler system with galvanized piping; existing above-ceiling protection to remain.

Infrastructure: Local riser has capacity for new connections; compressor required with noise attenuation near bedroom.
